It was in the mid-1980’s that I first had a taste of Boracay. Back then it was simply a beach destination for the adventurous. I went mostly because I liked the sound of its name…Boracay. Fast forward, the name Boracay is now pronounced several ways and if you’ve given up on the right correct pronunciation. Simply call it Bora for short.

Back then there were no menus of activities in Boracay. Simply go and be in awe of its fine powdery white sand, the kind that does not burn your bare feet even in the hottest of summers and its iconic azure, sapphire, cobalt, blue-greens, of different shades of course crystal clear waters.

There was no electricity, only a couple of restaurants and best of all no People for several miles. Yes believe it, at that time Boracay was virgin. I was lucky enough to travel at the tail end of summer where the breeze had cooled down, the beaches emptied, sand bugs all had disappeared and best of all, had all the staff of the hotel at my beckon call.

I remember staying in an indigenous hut right in front of the beach and the famous Boracay Rock. I had the resort all to myself and my astonished foreign guest. I had the resort staff set-up a table on the water where we could have our meals while the waves gently came crashing at our bare feet. It was simply paradise, My Boracay Paraiso.

It was a time where Rave parties where yet to be the rave unlike the present where Ibiza types parties continues on through the day. Literally, from sun up to sun up. Then, you simply waded, sun-bathed, munched, slept, horse backed with the famous Boracay Stables and watch the glorious Sunset. Not that I’m complaining. Today Boracay is the Party place and is precisely why people go there. It is the Ibiza of the East. Of course you can still find your little spot of the paradise away from the main White Beach, mostly in the little quaint barangay of Bulabog among others.

Today aside from the plentiful, exotic restaurants and clubs, activities outside of the usual such as skimming, Kite boarding, Ultimate Freesbie and beach volleyball. Boracay still remains my little paradise.
